Help with soloing on guitar?
I’m trying to figure out how to make up solos on the spot but I just don’t get it.
I know the major scale and the blues scale and the pentatonic scale.
Say I just want to solo over the chords G and C being strummed.
Learning the scales is important – no lie.
And now that you know them, forget them.
Play the notes. Find the tonal center (is it G, or C?) and start with one note.
B.B. King would often play just one note – but it was always the right note
Then play two, then three. If you have an idea, play it more than once.
There are no ‘wrong’ notes. There is only tension and release. Did you play a note that you thought was ‘wrong’? It is merely tension looking for release. You can release it by going to a note on either side (sliding, bending, or just playing the next note).
If you play a ‘wrong’ note – play it again. There is a reason why it is cool, and if you are playing on purpose to make the tension stand out, then the release will be that much sweeter.
Playing the notes is important.
And when you have learned that, forget it.
As important as the scales are … the note are more important.
As important as the notes are … the spaces between the notes are more important.
Play the spaces in between the notes.
