Mic to laptop for recording, cant get correct Port to REC?

Alright here’s the deal, I have a new HP laptop w/ Vista, and I downloaded Adobe soundbooth CS4 (I have also tried on windows recorder and a movie maker I have, to no avail) and it uses the default microphone above the screen by…default….and I am trying to get the sound to record from the Headphone type Microphone port on front / back of laptop, and I have a device that is a headphone connection (Male) on one end and a Guitar/ mic input (Female) on the other that I got at Radio Shack. Ive tried changing the input port default but the only other option is a headset Mic (Blue tooth) and I am getting a pop sound from the Mic its self, when i jog the cord a little like its a speaker, and i tried playing music but it didn’t play anything out of the mic so its not that….does this mean my radio shack device is a one way device only? (and don’t choose the easy answer) or is there another way to route default audio ports in settings? please help!…^^;

If you have Vista 64, it may have to do with the fact that 64 bit does not support kernel drivers and will give you recording problems. I have 2 recording programs on my Vista 64 system that will just not record
