about the dots in the guitar fret?
Hi guys, I’m taking guitar class in high school and just finished guitar 1, now going to guitar 2 lol..
Anyway, I’m pretty ok player I guess. Um, I know that dots indicate which fret to use easily but did you guys look at the dots to find the fret when you were novice? Or did you just learned by fingering feelings? I knew that the dots were there but I forgot about it the whole time and ended up not looking at it and playing it.
Is that bad or good? (I can only go up to 7th fret without looking and go up to above 10th fret without counting lol, I guess that makes me noob). Should I start looking at dots from higher than that?
When learning, it is perfectly fine to look at the frets to make sure you have your fingers in the right place. If you get to where you can play some notes without looking, that is great. It means you are becoming familiar with the instrument. Eventually you will get to a point where you can play with your eyes closed. The dots are called fret markers and are simply a visual aid. Use them when you need to. Even if after 10 or 15 years you have to glance at the fret board for reference, it will not mean you haven’t improved. There is a lot going on (6 strings with 20 to 24 frets) well over a hundred placement possibilities. Not to mention the hundreds of possible chord combinations.
